Domain Forwarding, Subdomains & Wildcard Records for Associations: The Practical Guide for Virtualmin

Learn how, as an association, to cleanly manage multiple domain variants, typo domains, and redirects on your Virtualmin server without endangering SEO ranking or email delivery.

Why Domain Forwarding Matters for Associations

Associations often have multiple domain variants: the main domain, spelling variants with hyphens, typo domains, and perhaps both a .de and a .org domain. Without clean management, this leads to confusion among members, duplicate content, and potentially lost emails. In this guide, I'll show you how to bring order to a Virtualmin server—without endangering your SEO ranking or impairing email delivery.

Basics: Setting Up Domain Forwarding Correctly

Domain forwarding means that one domain is redirected to another. For associations, this is ideal for redirecting typo domains or old domains to the main site. In Virtualmin, you can set this up via Server Configuration > Website Redirect. Important: Choose a 301 redirect (permanent) so that search engines understand the redirect and the ranking of the target page is strengthened. Avoid 302 redirects, as they are temporary and do not pass on SEO signals.

Redirect with or without path?

Consider whether you want the redirect to include the path. When a visitor calls old-domain.de/verein, they should land on new-domain.de/verein—not on the homepage. In Virtualmin, you can control this via the "Preserve path" option. This keeps deep links functional.

Don't Forget Email When Forwarding

If you forward a domain but want to receive emails for that domain, set up an MX record and configure the mailbox separately. Virtualmin allows you to manage emails independently of the web redirect. This way, no messages sent to the old domain are lost.

Using Subdomains Sensibly

Subdomains such as mitglieder.verein.de or blog.verein.de help to structure content. In Virtualmin, you can easily create subdomains via Create Server > Subdomain. Make sure that each subdomain requires its own SSL certificate (Let's Encrypt can be set up automatically in Virtualmin).

Subdomains and SEO

Subdomains are treated by search engines as independent websites. This can have advantages and disadvantages: A blog on blog.verein.de does not compete directly with the main domain, but backlinks are counted separately. For associations, this is often unproblematic as long as the content is relevant. Make sure you do not create duplicate content by offering the same content on both the subdomain and the main domain.

Email and Subdomains

Subdomains can also be used for email addresses, e.g., info@mitglieder.verein.de. To do this, set up a separate MX record for the subdomain. Virtualmin supports this via the subdomain's mail settings.

Wildcard Records: Blessing and Curse

A wildcard DNS record (*) catches all undefined subdomains. This is practical for redirecting typo subdomains to the main site, but beware: Wildcards can also have unwanted effects, such as when emails are sent to wrong subdomains and end up in a wildcard mailbox.

Wildcard for Web Redirects

In Virtualmin, you can create a wildcard subdomain that redirects to the main domain. This way, visitors from tippfehler.verein.de automatically land on verein.de. Set up the redirect as a 301 to avoid SEO problems.

Wildcard for Email

A wildcard MX record forwards all emails to undefined subdomains to a specific server. This can be useful for catching lost emails, but it also opens the door to spam. It is better to create targeted mailboxes for important subdomains and avoid wildcards.

Protecting SEO Ranking: Canonical and Duplicate Content

If you forward multiple domains to the same content, pay attention to canonical tags or 301 redirects so that search engines recognize the main domain as the original. Avoid offering identical content under different domains without redirects—this can lead to penalties. In Virtualmin, you can set up a separate website with individual canonical tags for each domain if you have different content.

Don't Endanger Email Delivery

Domain redirects must not impair email delivery. Ensure that a valid MX record exists for every domain that should receive emails and that the mailboxes are configured correctly. After changes, test delivery with tools such as mail-tester.com. Under Email Settings, Virtualmin offers the option to manage redirects and mailboxes separately.

Practical Tips for Implementation

  • Document all domains and redirects in a table so you keep an overview.
  • Use 301 redirects for permanent redirects and 302 only for temporary actions.
  • Check regularly the redirects with an HTTP status code checker.
  • Set up an SSL certificate for every domain, including redirected domains, to avoid security warnings.
  • Avoid wildcard records for emails unless you are deliberately catching spam.

With these measures, as an association you can cleanly manage multiple domains and subdomains on your Virtualmin server without endangering your SEO ranking or impairing email delivery.
